Transcript: Work Experience @ AoBBlog.com In January I attended the marketing meeting at Oxford University Press. The meeting gave me an interesting insight into the world of academic journal publishing. I met with the Editor in Chief and Managing Editor from Annals of Botany, as well as the team members from AoBBlog, Anne and Alun - pictured right. I didn't have much to contribute to the meeting but from the discussions I went on to write a 'staying up to date with AoBBlog' post which is scheduled to be published shortly. In Conclusion! When I started writing articles I was very self conscious about my work. Writing in a journalistic manner was something new to me and I felt I struggled to get the right voice for my writing. When I expressed this to Anne, my supervisor and the Editor in Chief at AoBBlog, and Alun, the digital producer, they were very empathetic and helped me by editing the articles when I had submitted them. AoBBlog uses a platform called Wordpress to submit content which I hadn't used before. It was relatively easy to get the hang of but the first article I submitted twice accidentally and the draft edition was published by mistake. A bit about me! The freelance aspect of the placement did have its merits. Whilst I was feeling well I was able to go to work, finish at 5 and go to the local library until it closed at 7 and get plenty of work done. I would have been very restricted by a placement in which I was required to attend regular hours. I also managed to do lots of work whilst on long journeys to and from my hometown. Where I work currently staff cannot work offsite without a pre-approved company laptop which would have been far more difficult than working on my own laptop which I would have packed anyway, this is an obvious benefit of working 'freelance'. I'm currently working full-time in Norwich and so working on a freelance basis seemed perfect for me. In my mind, freelance work meant I could work around my 9-5 job and write articles in the evenings/weekends. This turned out not to be the case for a number of reasons, mostly medical. In the end I managed to work around my medical set backs to a degree. I spent a lot of time in waiting rooms and found that it was a really good place to do some research into the next article or look for links to be posted on the AoBBlog twitter account (@annbot if you're interested). I published my first article in December as part of the Plant Records week and it's currently been shared 81 times. Working at AoBBlog was ultimately a very rewarding experience. I learnt a lot about my capabilities with regards to the ME as well as getting valuable insight into how a journal is run and the world of academic publishing in general. My Role at AoBBlog Alexandra Boliver-Brown What is AoBBlog? AoBBlog is the online presence of the Annals of Botany organisation They post a wide variety of types of articles but mainly news and views articles focusing on plant science and ecology At AoBBlog I worked as a guest author, writing several articles posted on the site. I also attended the marketing meeting at Oxford University Press as well as shadowing the staff on an app called Slack Slack During my placement I was diagnosed with an illness called myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). I've had it since 2014 and when I started my placement it was reasonably manageable. The week after I was diagnosed I had a minor surgery and I didn't expect it to cause the ME to 'flare up'. I consequently spent most of February and March going to work, coming home and sleeping straight away which was not good when AoBBlog were expecting an article. Fortunately for me they were very understanding even when I went MIA for several weeks. Slack is an app which allows you to communicate with colleagues in real time. It's much more efficient to use than emails as everyone in the 'channel' can see everyone's responses immediately (if everyone checks their phone). It's also useful when everyone is dotted all around the country as it is for AoBBlog.

Transcript: What I choose and why Week 2, School house restaurant Quality solicitors Chapman and Chubb is located at Somercotes and Alfreton, I spent 3 days at the Somercotes office and 2 at the Alfreton office, at the main office in Somercotes i was with team of 6 women and was mentored by the by Aileen there, Aileen surprised with the work I was aloud to do as i thought i would be just sat there all day doing nothing, but she let me work on people cases and read people's files that I was working on. But when I wasn't working on peoples files or sometimes doing letters to be sent to people I was mainly doing filing or photocopying, as that side of being a solicitor is quite important as the record of business with a client needs to be kept. The other things I did was going in on will meetings for people who wanted to make will's and i also got to draft two will's, the person I worked with on that was called Rachel and she was in charge of doing will's and she mentored me on doing wills and was very helpful, I got to saw the company archives where they stored hundreds of client records of business. When i was at the second office I learned about divorce and the different types you can have, I learned how to put in a county court claim for clients, I got to find out quantum's for clients which is where you find out how much money you would get for an injury at work or a accident caused by somebody, the person I worked with that on was called Becky, and the majority of the week I was mainly photocopying overall the first week wasn't to bad. I believe the experience was worth while as it as help me choose my career more carefully and what I really want to do, from the experience I gained a better understanding of the job and its role and that not to always think about the money and do something you enjoy to do everyday of your life because its not really job then. School house restaurant is located in South Normanton. i spent 2 1/2 days there and worked 10am-2pm the reason for working 2 1/2 days is because on Monday the restaurant was closed and I was ill another day and one of the days i had to be at school, I worked with 2 people, a chef called Rob and a side chef called Connor. At the start of each day i had to prepare veg for use that day and most of the time i was there i was preparing dishes or veg, I didn't do much cooking while I was there, but I learned some catering skills like skinning salmon, how to cut things fast and thin, how to butcher a pheasant, but I would of learned more if I had been there the full week. when i was there I made cheesecakes, beef wellingtons, bacon pouches with pheasant inside and fish cakes. I didn't really spend that much time making dishes and didn't make that much as i was left with mainly preparing veg for the day. The overall view of my second week was that it was much better than the first as i feel catering with rob was quite fun as he had great banter and didn't feel bored like i did most of the time on my first week as the task's set except veg prep were more enjoyable. Work experience presentation By Alex Ford Week 1, quality solicitors Chapman and chubb For my first week i choose a solicitors, the reason why I choose a solicitors, is because i considered it a possibly career path for me when i am older and because they earn a lot of money. The second week I got to work in restaurant, I wanted to work in a restaurant because I enjoy catering and it is something I might want to do at college and then hopefully become a baker or something involving confectionery, I prefer the desert and cake side of catering than savory. what i got from the experience and is it worth while

Transcript: Work Experience in a Secondary School My placement My placement was completed at Swanlea Secondary School specialising as a business and enterprise college. I gained my placement contacting the school through email. I had to go in and meet the deputy head and discuss my grades my GCSE and A level and the days I will be free. I had to also complete an application form and get a DBS check provided by the school. My role consisted of creating Sociology resources for AS and A level students that would support them in revision and in lessons for teachers. -This school has been doing well, as it was graded by OFSTED as outstanding in all categories for the second time. -In 2015, they were awarded Teaching School status, delivering excellence in outcomes across all key stages and subject areas (Swanlea, 2015). My placement I have chosen this work placement because I am thinking of pursuing a career in teaching. This placement has helped me to decide whether I would want to do teaching specifically in a secondary school. My experiences of volunteering with children, paitents and customers as well as charity work has provided me with skills in communication, organisation and time management helping me in this context. Studying Sociology in A-Level and continuing it in University, allowed me to implement my knowledge into my role. This opportunity is valuable to me if I do apply for a PGCE as experience in a school is necessary for an application. Tasks performed Photo-copying, cutting out resources for classrooms. Typing up answers to exam questions with the examiners feedback for students to revise from and see what can be done better to improve and so they don’t make the same mistakes. Creating multiple choice answers. Shadowing the deputy head (on most occasions and helped to plan events such as teacher's meeting after school (an insight into the many commitments teachers are expected to have). Observing lessons and see how the layout of teaching is presented. Helping out during classroom activities. Tasks performed Goals achieved Goals achieved Effectively communicate with students in the class. This was achieved through helping students during classroom activities by applying my sociological knowledge to explain. I was able to explain to them in simpler terms than what was written in the book, allowing them to understand clearly. Create quality learning resources This was achieved through planning each resource thoroughly and organising them correctly. I used official AQA textbooks to get information so it was specific to their examination. I was able to make classroom activities student friendly so it was easy to understand, yet useful for ain in their revision. Gain an understanding in how lessons are planned and structured This was achieved through observing lessons. I learn that 50 minute lessons should include: -The use of presentations as its key in delivering a visually aiding lesson that maintains the concentration of students. -First 20 minutes should be teaching with interactions involved such as asking questions. The next 15 minutes should be utilised by doing classroom activities such as worksheets based on the presentation. -The next 10 minutes should involve going over the answers to the activities which allows students to see what they got correct/incorrect and allows them to learn from their mistakes. -The last 5 minutes to set homework and go over any questions. A goal I didn't set myself but later realised I had achieved was familiarising myself with the GCSE and A Level exam specifications. This gave me an insight into how marking is awarded according to the quality of the work and looking at the feedback allowed me to understand the reason why. Skills gained Listening skills- developed through examining lessons and doing the tasks instructed correctly. High level of IT skills-Typing and writing skills when producing exam answers. Decision making- when looking for the correct answers for multiple choice answers. Skills gained Increased communication skills (confidence in explaining). High organisation skills - keeping track of all my resources on a USB. Time management was achieved through regular attendance, and completing resources/tasks on time. Skills developed Pros/Cons & Challenges Pros My skills as a team member allowed me to interact effectively with the teachers and students in the class. I was able to create resources for lessons by gathering ideas from both the teacher and deputy head. Having specialist subject knowledge in Sociology allowed me to successfully put this to use by helping students with any questions they had and also when typing up exam answers. Although one of my goals was to mentor a group of pupils, this did not happen due to the clash of time between the students and mines. Furthermore, it was complusory for many to attend revision classes during the weekend and therefore there was no extra time for mentoring. This however, is still one of my goals to achieve as I
