Transcript: Early-Middle Victorian Gothic Revival -pointed arches and gingerbread trim, blossomed during the 1840s. The Italianate style remained fashionable through 1880s. Low-pitched roofs & overhanging eaves with decorative brackets distinguish it. They feature tall, narrow windows that typically have elaborate decorative crowns. A defining feature is often a square cupola or tower. These are mostly modest middle-class houses, but several grand country estates were also built in this design. Second Empire design is basically an Italianate structure with a French mansard roof and dormer windows. Middle-Late Victorian Queen Anne is characterized by a steeply pitched, irregularly shaped roof and an asymmetrical façade often with patterned shingles. They are typically two stories, have a dominant front-facing gable, and feature a onestory porch The Eastlake design is similar to the Queen Anne style though usually somewhat smaller in size decorative elements included extremely creative and elaborate woodwork. The typical middle-class house was crammed full of furniture, fabrics were used in abundance and every available surface was overflowing with knickknack. Such displays were a means of showing off their new-found cultural interests, prosperity and status. They were also in accord with the fashionable notion that bareness in a room was in poor taste. Lighter colors tended to be avoided in town and city dwellings due to pollution. In the early Victorian period elaborate scrolled floral patterns were favored. Primary backgrounds of red, blue and green were common. Later in the 19th century Gothic inspired trellises painted in rich earth tones with stylized leaf and floral work were frequently used. Embossed paper were used on ceilings and friezes in order to counterbalance intricately patterned and colored papers. In many cases the chairs were covered in fabric to match the wallpaper. Furniture design was influenced by notable improvements in the technology of furniture making. They were hand-made and costly. The drapes were usually heavy velvet and often looped back with gold tassels. Lighting was provided by chandeliers and wall sconce. Arts and Literature She chooses a book from her library, miniature in size but otherwise authentic, and reads some prose before beginning another long day. The kitchen lacks the overall elegance of the rest of the house. Possibly because no one saw this room except the servants. The front foyer here has working chandeliers and the grandfather clock chimes on the hour. The paintings throughout the house were commissioned from well-known artists. Marble tiled floors and walls create a real castle appeal. The hand carved ceiling is etched in gold leaf. Fashions for women of higher classes became increasingly complex. Dresses had several layers of different shades, cloths and trimmings. Six petticoats at least were needed to hold the wide skirts out. The cotton, flannel or wool petticoats used under one skirt could weigh as much as 14 pounds, so clothes were uncomfortably hot and heavy in summer. Fun Facts The Dinning Room husband and wife slept in separate bedrooms with a connecting door in between them. In most cases each would have its own dressing room and a sitting room for the wife. The dinning room was one of the most important rooms. The walls were generally dark paneled. Designs included mazes of tangled lilies, brambles and vines. The gramophone plays comforting music and a glass of genuine vintage wine, from her wine cellar, awaits her on her night stand.
