Transcript: S.W.IR.L One of the most useful strategies we discussed is S.W.I.R.L. I like S.W.I.R.L. because it was designed for English Language learners but the framework can be implemented into any class. It is fun and it creates a foundation for learning new content. HOW DO I USE IT IN THE CLASSROOM? I use SWIRL in all facets of instruction from Bell Ringer to Closure because often times students are not familiar with academic/content language. Lesson CLASS ROOM USE Bell Ringer Beyonce's Word Instruction Guided Practice Independent Practice Activity Closure Sample Lesson- Age of Reason/Scientific Revolution Outline Speaking Both are aligned with "Speaking" portion of SWIRL. Bell Ringer- Students must write the question and answer it in their binders. BWOD- students must look up a key concept word and answer the who, what, when, where,and why is it important to history? Then I choose students to come to the board and explain their answers out loud. Bell Ringer and Beyonce's Word R/L Instructional I like to use interactive guided notes in order to explain and introduce materials. I lecture, but students are able to read along, listen, and write at the same time. Illustration Body Biography Complete the Body Biography Activity on either Locke, Rousseau, or Hobbes. You pick!LABEL! Label your body biography with the philosopher’s name Each writing piece should be completed in a different color! Color - Colors are often symbolic. What color(s) do you most associate with your philosopher? Why? How can you effectively weave these colors into your presentation? 2 Symbols - What objects can you associate with your philosopher? Choose objects that especially seem to correspond with the philosopher. Include a brief statement that explains the symbol! Heart- The area where your philosopher’s heart would show their view on religion. Right Hand- should illustrate actions and accomplishments OR what they contributed to history Left Hand- should contain the type of government they thought was best Brain- his belief about the nature of man Left Leg- This should illustrate their view on the “Social Contract.” Right Leg- how do they influence today’s society? Writing and Illustration- Guided Practice Reading\Writing I had students read a secondary source about the Scientific revolution and create a wanted poster for one of the Scientist. Independent practice- Reading , Illustration and Writing Reading Writing 2 Wanted Poster Activity- Imagine you are a leader in the Catholic Church and have created a wanted poster (advertisement) for one of the scientist in the notes. •Your wanted poster should include –A picture of the scientist, his experiments, or his beliefs –A 1 paragraph (4-5 sentence) summary of what the scientist discovered and why he should be brought to trial by the Church •Answer the following questions in your paragraph –What made the Church see these scientists as radicals? Why were their thoughts a problem for the Church? –Your poster should take up the entire paper, be neat, creative and well written! Independent Practice/ Homework Results Students were more involved in learning. Students asked more questions about scientists and philosophers and seemed to understand the content better since they scored a class average of 73% on the Unit Assessment and 96% passage rate on EOC. I learned that History can be boring if we don't spice it up, and that students like to color and show off thier artistic skills. If I had to do this differently, I would have planned for two class periods instead of one, because students like to take their time with art. Results

Transcript: SWIRL is a new and innovative way to help people in wheelchairs. Crossing streets at night may be dangerous for these individuals because drivers have a hard time seeing them. Our innovation would change this. The SWIRL is a bright string LED lighting system that can easily be installed to function on any type of wheelchair. What is SWIRL? Cool. How does it work? You want your love ones safe. The lights are applied with adhesive tape and are connected to a receiver that attaches to the middle of the wheel. Will I be able to afford it? Most of us know someone who uses a wheel chair. Most of these people are very 'handi-capable' and live very active lives. However, they are still at a disadvantage when it comes to a moving car, especially at night when they cannot easily be seen. SWIRL would help avoid many accidents each year. When the button is pressed, the lights on both sides of the chair will flash for a set period of time that can be chosen by the user. Besides the usual, we would need very simple materials that would include LED light strands, a cutter to cut the strands, and adhesive to apply to the rope lights. Finally, the lights come with a wireless button and remote transmitter, and a receiver for the lights to flash. You want to be active We want to help. Resources Thanks and gig'em The SWIRL consists of a series of LED lights that are attached to the spokes on the left and right sides of a wheel chair. Of course! The SWIRL has low cost production and the saving will be past on to the consumer. When the wheelchair user comes across an intersection or any area that the lights would be useful, they can press the remote button which will allow vehicles to see them from a far away distance. Team 31 - Antidisestablishmentarianism ICC Innovation SWIRL- Safe Wheelchair Illuminating Rope Lights Flashing lights make signs much more noticeable and the intersections much safer. The team's idea was based off of flashing lights on some stop signs and caution signs throughout campus. This idea was modified to suit another target market, but to serve the same purpose; to make intersections safer for pedestrians. SWIRL has bright flashing LED lights in strands that will let drivers see the wheel chair with plenty of time to brake accordingly, eliminating the added danger a traveling handicapped person would normally encounter. The handy remote control capability allows the SWIRL device to be easily activated by person in the wheelchair. Needs “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do.” Precedents This button contains two AAA batteries and is the remote device that tells the control when to activate the lights. This small center control contains a rechargeable battery to power the device. In addition, there is an easy to attach button that is placed on either arm-rest of the chair.

Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
