Transcript: About the show Cont. About the show Who? Director: Rouben Mamoulian Composer: Richard Rogers Lyricist: Oscar Hammerstein II What? Basis: Liliom, a 1909 play by Ferenc Molnár. Synopsis: Brash carousel barker Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, a quiet girl who works in the mill, fall in love, marry, and have a stormy relationship that leads to tragedy and an attempt at mending old wounds from beyond the grave. The main innovation of Carousel was the more dramatic blurring of lyrics and dialouge, as well as the importance of the songs themselves. Making each song somewhat important to the overall story of the show. I believe Carousel would be succesful today mostly due to the fact that there are was a preformance April of this year in London that did well. Consist of for memebers with amazing voices.Their music is soothing and i love their songs especially their amazing voices they reach very high notes. Carousel April 19, 1945 - The Majestic Theatre February 22, 1949 - The Majestic Theatre June 2, 1954 - The City Center September 11, 1957 - The City Center March 24, 1994 - Vivian Beaumont Theatre Summary In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant, and desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent up there. Billy is allowed to return to Earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager. Her father's reputation as a thief and bully have haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. Transcript: Double Casting/ and Heavenly People Sexy Play Synopsis -Proscenium Theater -The stage will be designed to look like the end of a pier. -The Backdrop is a painting of the pier going towards the shore. -Nettie's house stage left -There will be a small carousel that will appear during the opening, ballet, and end of the play, to play with the theme of how life is like a carousel. Set Design -Time Period set in the late 1800's -Keep the original accent -Keep all of the original lines/ add one line for Julie "But that don't excuse it" for when she is talking to Billy after he died Time Period/ Script Billy Bigelow, the handsome barker for Mrs. Mullin’s carousel meets Julie Jordan, a mill girl, and the two of them decide to get married . After two months have passed Billy has turned out to be an unreliable and violent husband, but when Julie tells Billy that they will be having a baby, he becomes desperate to provide for the coming child and decides to participate in a robbery. The robbery attempt fails, and Billy ends up committing suicide to avoid going to prison. Billy goes to heaven’s gate and meets the Starkeeper, who allows Billy to go back to earth for one day fifteen years later to try and provide hope for his family. But before we had these things we had pull toys. Children in the stone age used to see their parents pulling the wood or food by a string. Before you knew it children started pulling other things (such as each other) and seeing who could pull it fastest. But that is only a theory since we have not discovered any pictures or remnants of these toys. History: Update 2 How a pull toy works A pull toy is a toy designed to be pulled along the ground and usually having moving parts that make sounds as it is pulled. A pull toy works when a child usually between the ages of 2-3 holds the end of a string and pulls the toy in a straight line along a smooth surface. When the toy is pulled the wheels begin to turn as well, there is usually a mechanism like a cam and follower that is making a specific body part move. These competitive contests were known as "carousella". The original game required you to grab a ring from a dispenser. If you were able to grab the ring you could win a ride on the carousel. The original game caught the attention of bystanders. People thought the carousel would be fun to ride. Carousels were beginning to be made for entertainment. They were powered by horse or man until the 1860s when the modern American carousel was made. Carousels would now be powered by steam engines. The "golden age" of carousels and amusement parks lasted until the Great Depression. Gustav Dentzel carousels were beginning to be made for the soul purpose of entertainment. Adults, children, or anyone would be able to enjoy this fun experience. References One inspiration for the carousel was Gustav Dentzel's father, Michael Dentzel. When he was younger he would always travel in horse drawn wagons. This inspired Dentzel to use horses as the animal to sit on. The Dentzel family believed that their machine should be unique. Therefore, they used wild animals like giraffes, tigers, lions and dogs. After deciding that the machine would rotate, it was now decided that each animal should move up and down to give the effect of actually riding an animal. There was also a negative aspect of the carousel in Europe. They used dead horses and animals on the carousel. Children were getting disease because of this.One child died because the hippo he was riding was not dead and threw him off. *hey they got to ride their dinner before eating it*
