Transcript: FZ Kassidi Save the Children OVERVIEW Save the Children-Mission Save the Children invests in childhood – every day, in times of crisis and for our future. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. By transforming children's lives now, we change the course of their future and ours. History Russian children fed by Save the Children during the 1921 famine. -Save the Children's founder, Eglantyne Jebb, and her sister Dorothy Buxton were part of the Fight the Famine movement, spreading information about what was happening in Europe. Risks On The Grounds Risks On The Grounds -There are both cultural barriers and security concerns when volunteers and aid workers are sent on the grounds. Stannard’s Afghan lieutenant Dr Basir says: ‘‘I had to talk for more than two hours to convince the district governor in Gizab that he should allow his wife to become a student." -Local Save the Children worker. Example -Another challenge brought by cultural barriers is training local populations especially women or even surpassing cultural beliefs for instance Australian programs administered by Save the Children include more than 50 community-run education efforts for about 1700 children who cannot get to school – for cultural or security reasons a great example is in Afghanistan. "What I didn’t know then was the extent of the logistical challenges we were to face. Naively I’d assumed that the major hurdle was getting the aid into the country in the first place, but slowly the full picture emerged. As teams attempted to get to the epicentre of the quake outside Kathmandu and to assess the damage, they were thwarted by damaged roads and landslides. The electricity, phone and internet were down, so we couldn’t co-ordinate with communities, understand exactly what their needs were, or to tell them that we were trying to reach them. While our logistics teams desperately tried to bring aid into the country, they simultaneously attempted to find warehouses, which were still standing, secure and large enough to house the life-saving supplies. The next challenge was finding enough trucks and fuel to move the aid to the warehouses, and then out to the communities."
