Most philosophers attribute the difficulty to the obscurity of truth or the natural weakness of our senses and/or faculties. Perhaps it is not the weakness of our senses or faculties so much as our using them poorly. “This would not be agreeable to the accustomed indulgent methods of Providence…” Introduction: Contra Abstract Ideas Skeptical Chihuahua Sec. 6-9 Abstraction as a false principle and source of error: Berekeley attributes the foundation of a great deal of error and scepticism in philosophy to the notion of abstraction. Per Berkeley, everyone agrees that qualities do not exist completely separate from other qualities and their object, though, some believe that humans can conceptualize certain qualities alone and, by conceptualization, form abstract ideas. Extension/Color/Velocities: the mind examines goups of particular qualities, finds what is common to the group, and then abstracts that common feature by conceiving of it individually. Man/Animal: likewise, the mind considers those simple qualities which are common to complex ideas, like Peter and James, or birds, fish, and men, and then extracts an abstract notion for each group. Sec. 10 We are not capable of true abstraction “I can consider the hand, the eye, the nose, each by itself abstracted or separated from the rest of the body. But then whatever hand or eye I imagine, it must have some particular shape or color… And it is equally impossible for me to form the abstract idea of motion distinct from the body moving." Locke: Abstraction provides a “perfect distinction” between men and animals as there is no evidence that animals do abstract things. It seems that they could not abstract because they do not use words or language. “words become general by being made the signs of general ideas.” Berkeley: “words become general by being made the sign, not of an abstract general idea, but of several particular ideas, any one of which it indifferently suggests to the mind. (divisibility of extension, changes in velocity) An idea, like a word, “becomes general by being made to represent or stand for all other particular ideas of the same sort.” "Algebraic Variable" model of general ideas Sec. 11-12 Locke on abstraction and Berkeley’s replacement theory Sec. 13-14 Abstraction creating incoherent ideas Locke’s example of an abstract idea of a triangle, which embodies all qualities of all triangles at once. Can anyone really conceptualize this? The concept seems incoherent and implausible. Locke says that such a process of learning to abstract is undertaken into adulthood. If this is true, however, then we would have the memory of it. Surely, it wasn’t undertaken in our infant years for the sheer difficulty of the task. Sec. 15-16 Further development of the Algibraic theory of general ideas Q: If the representational idea of a triangle does not embody all qualities of all triangles, then how might one know anything about all triangles? A: The only thing needed to know something of all triangles is the properties which make something a triangle in the first place, so any representative triangle will do. Transcript: Found the secret medical tests to be in violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights act and federal constitutional privacy guarantees. The tests were determined to be both discriminatory and personally invasive. The US Department of Energy changed its policies and required more clear communication with employees regarding the nature of medical exams. Berkeley halted the syphilis and sickle-cell-trait screenings and women were checked for pregnancy only if they signed a consent form. Berkeley settled for 2.2 million dollars. What Happened? 7 people filed a lawsuit in district court charging the Berkeley Lab with four counts: Failing to provide adequate safeguards to protect the test results from being known to others. Violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Violating the American Disabilities Act. Violating the right to privacy. What was the verdict? Appeals Court The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (run by the U.S. Department of Energy) was performing secret medical testing on employees. What happened in the court case? How did they use the test results? Latinos and African American employees were retested for syphilis during periodic exams. No whites were retested with the exception of one white man who had married a black woman. African Americans were tested several times for the sickle-cell-trait. Women were tested for pregnancy during each exam. Would you consent to having any tests done by your employer? If so, what tests woulds be permissible in your mind? Is there a situation where tests done by an employer could be beneficial, or even necessary? The Lab claimed they posted a sign informing workers of testing. Mark Covington said they withheld information. After the Human Genome Project finished in 2003, efforts were reignited. Congress and the government wanted citizens not to be afraid of having genetic testing done for their own health and the benefit of society. A Bloody Mess at One Federal Lab: Norman-Bloodsaw v. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Reference Articles The federal district judge Vaughn Walker ruled that: There was a lack of demonstration of harm under Title VII. Even though the lab failed to provide a legitimate purpose for the tests, they were still only minimally intrusive. There was also no proof of a connection between the tests and employment status. Several incidents, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory secret testing, also made the case for legislation. It was never disclosed whether test results were used as a basis for decisions about hiring, firing, or promotions. The laboratory did say that employee medical records were "considered valuable epidemiologic research records" leading some workers to believe that they were part of a study tracking disease patterns in minority groups. . Who was targeted for retesting? Marya Norman-Bloodsaw recognized the syphilis testing code and was horrified. She then asked several colleagues to request their own medical records so they can compare notes. She and the other employees enlisted the help of Vicki Laden of the Legal Aid Society who combed the medical records of about 70 current and former Berkeley laboratory employees. If a cure for sickle cell anemia had been discovered, would that make what Berkeley did okay? Does the end justify the means? This is one of the most known places on campus. Its nickname comes from its resemblance. UC Berkeley is ranked the 4th in the world by Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and 9th globally by Times Magazine. As of 2012, there are 71 Nobel laureates associated with Berkeley. 28 alumni are Nobel laureates. 9 Nobel laureates are faculty members The Big Game Week precedes the playing of the much-anticipated Stanford-California football game each fall, and continues to be the campus's most popular tradition. Early manifestations included the singing of California songs for five minutes at the start of each class, spontaneous rallies between classes, and a rally on the night before the game. "Blue Monday," a day on which students who were discovered wearing red, Stanford's color, were singled out for public embarrassment University of California, Berkeley Colleges and Schools 4.0 Ball: The stone ball in front of the Campanile is more than a century old, but the tradition associated with it is much newer. Nobody knows exactly when students began referring to the sphere as the "4.0 ball." Apparently, rubbing it right before taking an exam is good luck, along with wearing your lucky socks and getting a good night's sleep. Berkeley was founded during the gold rush by leaders that formed the newly 31st state Berkeley was made up of two institutions: the private college of Oakland, and the mechanical arts college. It received its name from an eighteenth century irish philosopher George Berkeley. California residents: Resident=$32,886 Non-residents=$28,492 Living with relatives= $23,772 Berkeley's Early Stages Sather Gate is a prominent landmark separating Sproul Plaza from the bridge over Strawberry Creek, leading to the center of the campus. The gate was donated by Jane K. Sather, a benefactor of the university, in memory of her late husband Peder Sather. Student Life Berkley has many different dining options for residents and non residents. some of the options include: Crossroads, Cafe 3, Foothill, and Clark Kerr. All of these places have executive chefs and are only available to residents. There are also many other dining options for non-residents and residents. Dining Hall Involvement of Berkeley in World War II The Sather Gate There are a total of 36,142 students attending Berkeley. (As of 2011) Berkeley has 14 different colleges and schools for students to attend to. The most attended schools are the Hass School of Buisiness, the College of Engineering, and the School of Law. Courses and Degree Programs The students at Berkley all stay in dorms, like everywhere else. There are multiple dorms, with multiple levels. The students are paired up with a roommate and share a room. Students are responsible for themselves and their chores. Non- California residents Resident=$55,764 Non-Resident=$51,370 Living with relatives=$46,650 Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley is the flagship campus of the UC System. 10 faculty members and nearly 40 students made up the new University of California when it opened in Oakland in 1869. Construction of South Hall and North Hall on the northern site was promptly begun. In September 1873, the University and close to 200 students, led by UC President Henry Durant, moved to the new campus in Berkeley. Academics Berkeley's whole campus is 1,232 acres, but its central campus is 178 acres. The eastern portion of the campus is within the city of Oakland. The Northern portion of Berkeley is taken up by high quality restaurants. Last but not least, the south portion of the campus is a shopping district. To be eligible you must: Have a 4.1 GPA Fill out the FASFA Be in a household with less than $80,000 I am interested in a major in computer engineering Minimum ACT (with writing) Score- 25 University of California, Berkeley Out of State and living on campus- $55, 764.00 per year only for out of Tuition Admission deadline is November 30 Mascot is Oski the Bear English AP (Language or Literature) SCORE: 3 UC BERKELEY UNITS: 5.3 units (units will only be awarded for one test) REQUIREMENT FULFILLED: Entry Level Writing Requirement only. SCORE: 4 or 5 UC BERKELEY UNITS: 5.3 units (units will only be awarded for one test) REQUIREMENT FULFILLED: Reading and Composition “A” state- $22, 878 per year At Berkeley, there is no longer an essay question, but to be considered you have to have done the following: 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or 680 or better on the College Board SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; or 3 or above on either Advanced Placement Examination in English. Berkeley is the college that I am most interested in because it is one of the top colleges for computer engineering. While at Berkeley, I would like to live on campus and experience life in a new state. I believe that after college there will be many more job opportunities for me in California and this is where I would like to live for the rest of my life. Being a computer engineer, I will need to get my master's degree and being in California for my undergraduate will allow me to have a cheaper tuition later on. I would like to work for Google and their headquarters are in Los Angeles. I can see my future in California, therefore I know that is where I want to start my academic career.
