This day is dedicated to the social and economic achivements of the workers in America. In 1887 the first states to approve of state legal holidays were New York, New Jersey, and Colorado in 1887. Then eventually states added their own labor day. When was Labor day first named a national holiday? Labor Day Which States first approved of labor day? Records show that Peter J. McGuire first founded Labor day but others say that a machinist named Matthew McGuire found the day. He later on became the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in New Jersey and in 1882 proposed the holiday. Transcript: Labor Day How it Came to Be Labor Day started in 1882, when it was first celebrated on Tuesday, the 5th of September. No one is sure who started it. Some say it was Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Others say it is Matthew Maguire, and recent research seems to support this idea. What is clear, however, is that the idea was adopted and a committee was appointed to plan a demonstration and a picnic. The celebration of the holiday was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday.
