The History The Haitian flag came to be on May 18th, 1803 on the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie. It was said to be created by Jean-Jacques Dessaline. Haitian lore also states that Dessaline created the flag by taking the French tricolor flag and ripping out the white center, which he discarded. He then asked Catherine Flon, his god-daughter, to sew the remaining bands together. May 18th today is celebrated as the Haitian flag day, celebrating the heritage of the people. The First Haitian Flag (1803) The first flag having only the two colors blue and red represent the people. The blue of the flag represents the unity of the blacks while the red represents the mulattoes against the whites. The Meaning of the colors The Evolution Of the Flag The first flag of the Republic. A person born in Haiti could automatically receive citizenship. The name Haiti (or Hayti) comes from the indigenous Taíno language which was the native name given to the entire island of Hispaniola to mean, "land of high mountains." HTG (Haitian Gourde) is the national currency for the Republic of Haiti. The name, gourde, stands for gourde in French, or goud in the Haitian Creyol language. Pictures
