Transcript: Green Buildings Recycling By Why should you recycle: To reduce global warming To prevent air pollution To solve the problem of the growing landfills To prevent water pollution To save energy Houses that are from recycled materials: This one is made from old boats! This home is made from a silo. Have you seen the one outside of Urbana? This Buddhist temple in Thailand is made from recycled glass bottles. This home is from a plane. This sail boat was made out of plastic bottles, and sailed across the ocean! If we don't recycle... Top Reasons to Recycle (According to Princeton Univ.) 1.Recycling saves trees. Half the Earth's forests are gone, and up to 95 percentof the original forest area in the U.S. has been cut down. 2. Recycling protects wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Using recycled materialsreduces the need to extract natural resources such as timber, crude petroleumand mineral ores. 3. Recycling reduces the use of toxic chemicals. Making products fromalready refined waste materials reduces -- and often avoids altogether -- the needfor manufacturers to use toxic chemicals, essential when using virgin materials. 4. Recycling helps curb global warming. Recycling one ton of glass results in energysavings of more than 300% and lowers carbon dioxide emissions by 3.46 tons 5. Recycling reduces water pollution. Turning trees into paper is the most waterintensiveindustrial process in the United States. Paper recycling mills nearly alwaysuse less water and they don't pollute the water nearly as much. 6. Recycling reduces the need for landfills. Toxic pollution from landfills --including cyanide, dioxins, mercury, methane, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid andlead -- escapes into the air and leaches into groundwater. 7. Recycling reduces the need for incinerators. Municipal waste incineratorsspew out all kinds of air pollutants, and are often located in urban neighborhoods. 8. Recycling creates jobs and promotes economic development. The TexasNatural Resources Conservation Commission found that recycling added about$18.5 billion in value to the economies of 12 Southern states and Puerto Rico in1995. Transcript: Energy efficient light bulbs produce 75% less heat then regular light bulbs. Also last six times as long and uses 75% less energy. They save you roughly $6 a year on energy cost, but that can amount to more than $40 in a lifetime. An incandescent lightbulb cost 5 to 10 times more than you paid for it. These light bulbs do contain mercury though. You can also add solar panels to your home as well. Some plus sides to it are it saves money right now. Decreases the electric bill by at least 50% and also electricity costs have raised more than 21% in the last five years. With the fossil fuels disappearing energy costs with continue to be more expensive. The average American home uses 7.4 tons of carbon dioxide per year through electrical costs. Each hour enough sunlight hits the Earth to power the world for a year. By using solar panels we can reduce our need to use non-renewable resources. Homes with solar panels sell at a rate of 15% faster then homes without. Tax incentives and also rebates can bring the price of the panels down by 50%. Also they sell energy efficient refrigerators which they use 15% less energy then the others. Also it can cut your energy bills by $80. 170 million refrigerators are in us in the USA now, and more than 60 million of those are not energy efficient. by replacing your old one with a new one you can save roughly $200-1,100 on energy costs in your lifetime. All that money can then be put to something else. If everyone purchased an energy efficient refrigerator then we would reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by roughly what 100,000 cars make. The average family washes 300 loads of laundry a year. Which that can add up and make your house less energy efficient. By replacing your old washer you can use 20% less energy and 35% less water. They are bigger so you can fit more clothes into it, which means less laundry. If everyone bought an energy efficient washer nation wide would save us 200 billion gallons of water and also save $250 million every year as well. The best way is just to hang dry clothes, but with how people are so busy now it hardly ever happens. There really is no energy efficient dryer. It is the second biggest electrical user you have in your house. Dryers cost roughly $85 to operate annually, which can amount to be $1,530 to operate for 18 years. There are two types of stoves gas and electric. More Americans have an electric stove in their house, but gas stoves are making a comeback. Such as a gas stove cost half the price to operate then electric ones. Fun Facts! - A heavy layer dust can block half the light it gives off - An energy efficient washer can save more water than a person can drink in a lifetime. - A water faucet that leaks one drop per second can add up to 165 gallons of water a month, and that is more water than a person uses in two weeks. - Every time you open up the fridge 30% of the cool air escapes. - Every year $13 billion of energy leaks from houses through small holes and cracks. That is more than $150 per family. -http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=find_a_product.showProductGroup&pgw_code=LB -http://eartheasy.com/live_energyeff_lighting.htm -http://www.solarworld-usa.com/solar-for-home/why-go-solar.aspx -http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=find_a_product.showProductGroup&pgw_code=RF -http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=find_a_product.showProductGroup&pgw_code=CW -http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/home/appliances/dryers.html -http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/home/appliances/ranges.html -http://www.alliantenergykids.com/EnergyandTheEnvironment/SavingEnergy/022393 LED's are solid white lightbulbs and they are extremly energy efficient. You can also go with LED lighting as well. Some of these benefits to having LED lights are as follows; last ten times longer than the fluorescent bulbs, LED's are solid and do well when bumped and dropped. Only use 2-17 watts of electricity and are mercury free. These bulbs do not heat up, thus cutting you air conditioning bill down. They are expensive but the cost has gone down some in the past couple of years.
