Transcript: Side By Side Inspired by Art from Around the World Jan Greenberg Thoughts and Quotes "A good book is never a figment of the imagination. It begins as a stomachache. It's like falling in and out of love." "If I wait for an inspiring thought, I'll never get started. So I go straight to the project I've been working on and plunge right in." "The rhythm of the language takes me inside the skin of the main character." Ghery. This book explores his career choices, family life and experiences that influenced his exceptionally unique buildings. Awards Inspired by her daughters, Greenberg's first book, A Series in Between, was published in 1981 by Laurel-Leaf Books. Inspired by art and her parent's personal library, Jan Greenberg has been writing since age ten. #1 Professional Accomplishments #3 (cc) photo by jimmyharris on Flickr Chuck Close, Up Close Here are Her Gems The Sculptor's Eye: Looking at American Art Notable Books Christo and Jeanne-Claude Through the Gates Beyond Frank O. Gehry, Outside In This would be an excellent book to incorporate into a music or art unit. WOW Literary Strategies: Have students write their own poetry inspired by art. Choral Reading to help students feel the flow and personality in poetry along with involving them in the book. Adventurous students could read the non-English passages. Book talks to discuss the different types of poetry or different ekphrastic poems. Images from Ballet for Martha being shown while the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra played Appalachian Spring. Accomplishments Drawn together by a common love for art, Jan Greenberg has co-written over eleven books with Sandra Jordan. Collectively, these books, along with her own, have won over fifteen awrds. Side By Side Her parents library and continuous reading as a child instilled a life long love of reading, which encouraged her to write her own books. (cc) photo by Metro Centric on Flickr The Painter's Eye: Learning to Look at Contemporary Art Inspiration An anthology of ekphrastic poetry collected from artists around the world. This book includes poetry in its original text along with an English translation. Multiple styles of art and poetry are included in this collection to provide a rounded perspective and wide appeal. The introduction of Side by Side provides a brief history and guide to ekphrastic poetry. Side by Side could be used in the classroom not only to introduce different styles of poetry, but also different cultures. The popularity of Greenberg's books has provided the opportunity to travel around the world for book talks and confrences. She says these travels help her reconnect with the world and her writing. Greenberg graduated with a bachelors degree in English and an art minor from Washington University. In addition, she now has a Masters in Education from Webser University. #2 Greenberg was born in St. Luis, Missouri and now lives there with her husband.
