Transcript: Interdependence What is this Interdependence is when two countries rely on each other through their trade because each country has something the other country needs. Pros and cons of interdependence Review Questions Question #1 What does interdependence mean? Interdependence is when two countries rely on each other through trade because each country has something the other country needs. Question #2 What is not an example of interdependence? A non- example of interdependence is a person having food and water and doesn't need anything else and another person needing both but not having anything to give. Question #3 What is an example of interdependence? Someone needing water but having food and another person needing food but having water so they trade with each other for what each other needs thus making this an example of interdependence. Question #4 What are the countries in the example we showed you that use interdependence? Steve and Bob are the countries in the example and they traded lesson plans (education) for water. Question #5 What are some pros of interdependence? Pros of interdependence: Country A and Country B will always have a trading partner. Their will most-likely be no trade barriers beteween Country A and Country B. Also, since both countries have a good trading partner, their economies won't be bad. Question #6 What are some cons of interdependence? If country A runs out of what you need then it would make both of your countries economies crash because country A would lose a very important trading partner and country B would lose a place in which they can get the resources they need. Transcript: Martinique enjoys a marine tropical type climate distinguished by mild temperatures. The dry season runs from the end of November to the middle of June. The rainy season is from June to December. In the dry season, the weather is generally good, the flow of the trade winds is regular, the days are mild and the air is dry. This is the best time to visit the island and the Caribbean in general. In the humid season, the days are hotter and stickier, the trade winds are weaker and the rains are more frequent and severe. Cyclones and hurricanes may hit, even though are uncommon. Martinique’s local culture is diverse and well developed, so there is much to experience and celebrate on the island. Like most Caribbean islands, Martinique is a hybrid of cultures and communities. An intermingling of French, African and Creole have given birth to various local dialects influenced by each other, food that has flavors of all the three, music that is a combination of Afro-French and quite original, and customs that have traces of traditional African beliefs. The culture name is Martinican (sometimes spelled Martiniquan) Ile aux Fleurs ("Island of Flowers") is one of the island's unofficial nicknames; the other, invoking its magical charm, is Pays des Revenants ("Land to Which One Returns"). Bibliography Visitors interested in how rum is produced in Martinique are welcome to tour the Neisson Distillery. Just north of Fort-de-France sits the ruins of a castle called Dubuc Castle. The Diamond Rock is small - but with its own history. This rock stack is interesting geologically and visually, it has been used as a fortress in Napoleonic wars. One landmark is the Balata Cathedral located amidst lush tropical forest with mountainous background. Martinique's most important cathedral, the St. Louis Cathedral, is also in the capital city of Fort de France. The fusion of creole and French cuisine creates a unique variety of tastes smells and colors. Two local products are sugar cane and tropical fruit. The savory foods are Boudin créole, Accras de morue (fried cod dish), Blaff de poisson (fish boiled with lime juice speciality), and Fricassee de z’habitants ( springwater shrimp dish) The sweet food is Blanc mangé coco (a kind of flan) Alcohols are rum and rum based cocktails. Local Food and Agriculture Famous People and Landmarks Columbus sighted Martinique in 1493, but did not go ashore until another voyage in 1502. The French arrived to claim the island and begin permanent settlement there in 1635. They began to cultivate sugar cane and import slaves from Africa. As forests were cleared to make room for sugar plantations, fierce battles with the Carib Indians ensued. With the treaty of 1660, the Caribs agreed to occupy only the Atlantic side of Martinique. This peace was short-lived, however, and they were exterminated or forced off the island shortly thereafter. In 1762, the English occupied the island, but returned it the following year in exchange for Canada. They invaded and held the island once again from 1794 to 1815, when it was returned to the French. Sugar production has declined, with most of the sugarcane now used for the production of rum. Banana exports are increasing, going mostly to France. The bulk of meat, vegetable, and grain requirements must be imported, contributing to a chronic trade deficit that requires large annual transfers of aid from France. Tourism has become more important than agricultural exports as a source of foreign exchange. History
