The continuing challenge is to eliminate poverty and violence, and to ensure that equality rights guaranteed on paper by national laws and international agreements become a reality for every woman of every race, language, ethnicity, economic status, ability, and sexual orientation. Sounds pie in the sky? So did the vote for women. So did the abolition of slavery. So did the decriminalization of homosexuality. So did laws against child labour. So did an 8-hour work day and a 5-day work week. Every good idea started with a handful of committed people who were called crazy, unrealistic, and worse. They were attacked, vilified, spat on, dismissed and ridiculed. Some were murdered. They were accused of shaking the foundations of society and heralding an economic collapse. Instead, economies grew by leaps and bounds with increased rights for citizens, as women piled into the paid workforce, as more people had money in their pockets with which to fuel the market. Fortunately for most of us, that handful of "crazy" people stood firm. Our duty is to continue where they left off, as social justice is still a far-away goal for many women in Canada and around the world. We wish you a happy and productive millennium, in which your goals, and those of the world's women, are finally realized. by Marika Morris, CRIAW Research Coordinator Winter 2000 edition of the CRIAW Newsletter, vol. 20, no. 1 1974 1969 (cc) photo by Metro Centric on Flickr Emily Stowe becomes the first women to be licensed to practise medicine activities Royal Commission of Women made by Lester B. Transcript: The National Organization for women (NOW) was made up of upper and middle class white women who pushed for better representation of women in the government and were responsible for Title IX which made the government spend equally on male and female education and sports. Radical Feminism Post Modern feminists were a part of the third wave of feminism that supports the idea of no difference between men and women. They also fight for equality between men and women and an end to gender discrimination. Social/Marxist Feminists were also a part of second wave of feminism. They were concerned with the equal rights of women in the work force and at home. They claimed that the gender inequalities in and out of the work place were causing dependence and a lower class for women. After decades of activism including marches, letters, picketing, lobbying etc. the 19th amendment was made law in the year 1920 and women were allowed to vote for the first time in the United States of America First Wave I am a post modern feminist because i believe in equality and do not think that gender should inhibit anyone female or male. I also would love to see an end to gender stereotyping and equal representation in the government. There are many different types of feminism but one common unifying goal is for equality between men and women. The 19Th Amendment First wave feminism in the United States was called liberal feminism it was most known for demanding the voting rights of women. However also of concern were higher education for women and dress reform. What is Feminism? Marxist/Social Feminist During second wave 1960-1970 Radical Feminism began. This new feminism was aimed at changing society from patriarchy to equality. They claimed that many societal and political institutions were devaluing women. Their main targets for change were inequality in marriage as well as changing the subservient role to men. Some Radical feminists even encouraged the celebration of women as having good and useful qualities better than men. A major goal of many third wave feminists is to appreciate the steps that feminists before had taken to give us the rights that we have today. By: Meghan Ugolini/Marshall In the 1960's and 1970's a second wave of liberal feminism gained movement. These liberal feminists were concerned with better employment opportunities for women as well as reproductive and health rights such as ending domestic violence and rape. What Kind of feminist am I? Capitalism must end to create greater equality between the genders and encourage equality. Also social rules should be put into place to end the glass ceiling and gender segregated jobs. Who is a feminist? Post Modern Feminism “one is not born a woman, but becomes one" Cultural feminists are a part of the second wave of feminists 1960-Now. They believe that men and women are different and that women's culture and history should be respected. Also that issues pertaining to women should be for women to decide for example women's health and reproductive rights. The third wave of feminism is the modern feminism it has many different faces. Women and men of the third wave can act dress or be employed however they choose. Just like society today modern feminists are the most diverse and hold the most diverse ideas. What Marxist Feminists want?

Transcript: Intersectionality Feminism: Feminism: ˈfeməˌnizəm/ noun The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. We all know the dictionary definition of feminism by now, but we also know that it means a lot more than just those 16 words. Everyone has had a different experience with feminism, and everyone has their own definition for it. Freedom for our daughters is looking to build a collection of pictures and stories and quotes from people, feminists, around the world, so that we can all get a comprehensive global definition of feminism, and what it means to us. We're looking to break down the walls and stereotypes of the word and the movement, and we're looking for some help Our mission is to build safe housing and schools for girls in developing countries where young women are stripped of their rights simply because they are girls. On a local scale, we foster a safe space for youth to talk about issues surrounding gender inequalities in our monthly meetings. To find out how you can get involved in our monthly meetings, contact us. Freedom for our Daughters recognizes the constant struggle for equality and justice that women all over the world face each day of their lives. We are working to empower women to be agents of change in their communities, and giving them opportunity to break through the socially constructed roles of women in their countries. ffod.rosetintedlenses@hotmail.com I.e. oppressive institutions (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, etc.) are interconnected and cannot be examined separately from one another. These people can be human beings of any gender, although the ideology is commonly (and perhaps falsely) associated mainly with women. The basic idea of feminism revolves around the principle that just because human bodies are designed to perform certain procreative functions, biological elements need not dictate intellectual and social functions, capabilities, and rights. Feminism also, by its nature, embraces the belief that all people are entitled to freedom and liberty within reason--including equal civil rights--and that discrimination should not be made based on gender, sexual orientation, skin color, ethnicity, religion, culture, or lifestyle. Feminists--and all persons interested in civil equality and intellectuality--are dedicated to fighting the ignorance that says people are controlled by and limited to their biology. We all strongly believe that feminism is much more than its dictionary definition, and wanted some way to express that. And thus, this project was born. We wanted to collect, share and inspire stories and personal definitions of what feminism means to people, because being a feminist is a unique and passionate experience for everyone.
