Transcript: Odysseus's Journey THE 16 STOPS Odysseus serves in the Trojan War against his will, He leaves behind his family and now wishes to get back. Troy troy Odysseus takes over a fortress and his men decide to celebrate their victory. Odysseus then notices a ship carrying men who specialize in horse mounted combat and orders his men to retreat, however they are too drunk to follow orders and many are killed. Cicones Cicones Blown off course by a storm they land on the island of the Lotus Eaters and Odysseus sends some of his men to investigate the island. The men are presented with plants that make them want to stay on the island no matter what, Odysseus ties the men up and sets sail for another island. Lotus Eaters Lotus Eaters Odysseus lands on the island of a Cyclops. The Cyclops traps them and eats some men. Odysseus and his men blind him then escape from the cave by hiding underneath his sheep as they go out to graze. Cyclops Cyclops Odysseus gets a bag of wind full of all the bad winds he would have encountered. One of his crew mates opens it mistaking it for treasure. It sends them far off course. Island of Aeolia Island of Aeolia Cannibals destroy all other ships except for Odysseus and his crew. The crew of the other ships get eaten. Odysseus keeps sailing on. Laestrygonians Laestrygonians Odysseus’s crew go to the hall of Circe and think she is of no harm. They fall into her trap and Odysseus’s men get turned to pigs by Circe. One of the crew members stay back and tells Odysseus about the problem. Hermes gives Odysseus a moly to go and get his men back from Circe. Circe tells them to go to the land of the dead and find a blind prophet. Circe's Island (1st time) Circe Odysseus sacrifices a lamb to summon Teiresias, the blind prophet. When he arrives, he gives Odysseus a warning: he will have to land on Helios's island, but if they eat the cows, they will all die but Odysseus. Then when Odysseus gets home, his palace will be full of enemies. Land of the Dead Land of the Dead Odysseus and his men sail back to Circe’s island and Circe warns Odysseus of their future stops. First they will encounter sirens whose songs will make them go insane and die in a pile with others who listened to the song. Past the sirens will be two islands and between them is Scylla, a monster with 12 tentacles and 6 heads that will take 6 men no matter what. Near Scylla is an island lurks a monster named Charybdis who creates whirlpools with enough strength to kill Odysseus and his men. She suggests that it is best to lose only 6 men than lose all of them, so they must sail towards Scylla. They will eventually reach Thrinakia where Helios keeps his cattle, if they kill a single animal on the island his men will die and his ship will be destroyed. Odysseus relays the information to his men, but does not tell them that some men will die from Scylla. After explaining their path to his men they set off. Circe's Island (2nd time) Circe Odysseus places beeswax on his men's ears and tells them to tie him up so that he can listen to the sirens' song. After passing, his men untie him and continue sailing without knowledge that some will die. Sirens Sirens Charybdis is a giant whirlpool that has the ability to kill them all and destroy their ships. They have the option to pass by either her or Scylla to get home. They choose to skip Charybdis. Charybdis Charybdis Scylla is a giant monster-lady who eats one man from each ship as they pass by. She eats six in total. They have to pass by her to get home. Scylla Scylla Odyssesus and his men stop to rest on this island after passing Scylla. They are stuck for a while because of storms, and eventually get desperate and eat the Sun God's cows. Because of this, Zeus sends a lightning bolt to them and all men but Odysseus drown. Thrinakia Thrinakia Odysseus is trapped on Calypso's island for 7 years. Eventually Zeus sends a message through Hermes telling Calypso to let Odysseus go. Calypso's Island Odysseus lands here after he escapes from Calypso's island. He is treated as a guest and tells his story. Then the Phaeacians give him a magically swift ship to get home. Phaeacia Odysseus gets home, but his palace is full of suitors. He enters the palace disguised as a beggar and wins the contest his wife placed for them. After winning, he kills all the suitors and hangs the maids, then reveals himself to his wife. Ithaca
