Transcript: Duchene Muscular Dystrophy Alexa Bio 20-Doctor Doctor Herbert Last Name: First Name: Date of Birth: Age: Gender: The Patient Roy 05/16/2009 12 Male Picture of Roy MD Explained What is Muscular Dystrophy (general) MD is a disease where the muscles get weaker and lose mass over time. Abnormal genes interfere in the production of proteins to form healthy muscle. The protein is called dystrophin, the absence of this protein can cause trouble walking, swallowing, and muscle coordination. MD is most commonly found in boys. Types of Muscular Dystrophy 9 Types of MD Ducheen Becker Congenital Myotonic Limb-girdle Facioscapulohumeral Oculopharyngeal Distal Emery-Dreifuss The Causes of DMD DMD affect the shoulders and upper arms Specifically it is the skeletal muscles that gets affected -the muscle begin to get weaker over time and the muscle are smaller in size Over time DMD can affect the respiratory systems and the heart -In the respiratory system weakening of the diaphragm in people with muscular dystrophy results in reduced oxygen intake and decreased lung function What Systems, Organs, and Tissues get affected with DMD How DMD is formed genetically DMD carriers are females who have a normal dystrophin gene on one x chromosome, but a mutation on the second. DMD is most commonly found in males and symptoms usually get noticed in early childhood Males inherit one x chromosome from their mother and if it is one with a mutation they will develop the disease Graphics DMD worsens more rapidly than other types of muscular dystrophy. The most common form of muscular dystrophy. Estimated that one out of every 5,600 to 7,700 males between 5 and 24 years of age has DMD. Facts about DMD The Symptoms trouble walking loss of reflexes difficulty standing up poor posture bone thinning scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of your spine mild intellectual impairment breathing difficulties swallowing problems lung and heart weakness Other Symptoms There is no cure for DMD Treatment Physical Therapy helps strengthen the muscles. Glucocorticoids, more precisely prednisone and deflazacort, are the main drug treatment for DMD. They help strengthen the muscles as well. By age 12 most males with DMD are in a wheel chair What should Roy Do? Roy should use the prednisone and deflazacort drugs to strenthen his muscles. As well as regualr Physical Therapy.Roy's life expectancy can be up to the age of 27 but hopefully if he continues these treatments it could last longer. Document has sources Sources

Transcript: Doctor Doctor Bob Stewart has cystic fibrosis. Our patient Bob is a 43 year old man with a severe condition of CF. His dream would be to go on a trip. Cystic Fibrosis Cystic Fibrosis Around 30,000 people in the U.S. have cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is an uncurable disease passed down from generation to generation. It causes constant lung infections and slows breathing over time. Some people only have a tiny bit of CF, while others may have a very severe version. Symptoms Symptoms Lung infections Poor growth Malnutrition Respiratory problems Shortness of breath; wheezing Inability to exercise Deformity of nails Infection Liver disease Pain in many places Lots of coughing Diarrhea Constipation Acute bronchitis Pneumonia Nasal polyps Weight loss Salty-tasting skin and sweat Luckily, hard-working doctors and researchers have made breakthrough treatments that let these people live longer and healthier! Bob has always wanted to travel on a plane, but he can't because of the high altitude. His second choice would be a boat, which is why he's going on an Alaskan cruise. His trip Cystic Fibrosis might be rare, but it's very serious! Images Most people with cystic fibrosis die due to lung complications! Bob is lucky he's made it this far. Most people with CF are only expected to live to 40 years old, even with medicine! Lifetimes Planning Here are some of our plans for the trip: Bob Stewart has to take certain supplies with him so he can survive the trip. Here is what he needs to take with him to enjoy the trip. Bronchodilator Inhaler or nebulizer ciprofloxacin(antibiotic) Albuterol(Type of bronchodilator) Pulmozyme( medicine to control Thickness of mucus) acetylcysteine ibuprofen( medication to reduce inflammation) Creon(Enzyme replacement therapy) Plannning for the Trip Finale FINALE Bob Stewart went on his trip on Jul. 22 and he said "it was awesome". He said he was "fortunate to go on this trip with his condition". Bibliography Bibliography “What Is Cystic Fibrosis? Transcript: Emphysema is a disease that attacks the alveoli in our lungs. Emphysema makes the alveoli lose their elasticity so not much oxygen can reach the blood. Emphysema is generally caused by smoking, second-hand smoke, and air pollution. Some of the symptoms include shortness of breath, lips or fingernails turn blue or gray, and the distance from back to chest is increased. Emphysema damage cannot be reversed by treatments but can ease the pain. Emphysema was first modernly discovered by Matthew Ballie. He found out that emphysema caused the “enlarged air spaces” to not collapse properly. Dr. Rene Laennec, using his invention of the stethoscope, noticed the difference between chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Emphysema has been with mankind for over 200 years. COPD is one the fourth common cause of death in the U.S.A. Sir Joe Shmoe III was born on November 13, 1952 in London. He developed emphysema on his 53th birthday. Since then, he has been fighting a severe case of this deadly disease. He uses an oxygen tank 24 hours a day and has quit smoking for 5 years now. The predicted outcome is that he will survive, but only with proper treatments. Joe shmoe has been wanting to make this trip since he first got emphysema, but because of his condition it has been very hard. He asked the dream team to help and we said yes. The Dream Team provided all the supplies for Joe to make his trip. Emphysema greatly affects the respiratory system by making alveoli lose it’s elasticity. It makes so that not much proper oxygen can go in your blood. Emphysema also puts an extra strain on the heart. This happens because the blood has less oxygen, the heart must beat faster to get the oxygen it needs. If a patient has severe emphysema he/she can die of a heart attack. Inhaled steroids can relieve shortness of breath, but can weaken bones and increase risk of high blood pressure. A pulmonary rehabilitation helps the patient learn breathing exercises to ease the pain. For severe emphysema, oxygen in tubing is required. Sometimes the oxygen is required 24 hours a day. Pros The happiness of this trip can improve the mood of the patient. The light exercise can help with the patient’s endurance to emphysema. Cons The cold winds of Alaska can damage the lungs without protection. Lots of oxygen will be needed for this trip and it will be hard to transport. Travelers might be worried to have a person with that much cough. The patient will need to have oxygen at all times so we have designed a strap to put the oxygen in. The cold winds have an effect on the lungs, so we have a mask for when the patient is outside. The other passengers might have a fear from emphysema, so we have interviewed the passengers and told them that this disease is not contagious. The patient will have to avoid too much meat and fatty foods to avoid a heart attack. Always eat “lighter take” meals and eat lots of protein. The patient should limit salt. Supplementary oxygen will be needed. Patient should have a balanced diet. On the cruise, to travel to the mountains, he will need a private helicopter. For on the mountains, a buggy will be needed on land. For the room on the cruise, it should not be top mast to block from excess wind. A proper respirator should be added on the strap. We will need a special diet for our patient.
