Transcript: 4. Working Girl Growing up, I didn't allowance because money was tight, so I’ve always wanted my own income. When I got my first job at Taco Bell on my 16th birthday, I thought it was the best present. For the next summers, I picked up trash at the county fair and scooped ice cream at Baskin Robbins. I used my savings to start an investment account and asked my dad to cosign with me for my first credit card. Although they were menial jobs, I appreciated them because I learned how to work in a diverse workplace, demands of customer service industry, valued of hard earned cash, and accountability. 2nd Resident Advisor Staff 1st Resident Advisor Staff 3. Vancouver, not BC; Washington, no DC I spent my middle school and high school years in Vancouver, WA, a less known city that I would have a difficult time explaining to people when I moved to the East Coast. I graduated top 1% of my high school. My parents started their first acupuncture clinic, Healing Sage Acupuncture and Herbal Clinic. 6. "Beautiful Country" Moved to the U.S. at age 8 when my parents got teaching positions at an Oriental Chinese Medicine college The Chinese translation of America is "beautiful country", telling of how Chinese immigrants felt about the prospect of moving to the U.S. Struggled academically and personally in 3rd grade Gradually improved my English with the help of my classmates and ESL teacher I organized calligraphy classes at the school to foster cultural understanding Chapters of My Life By Samantha (Jing) Xue 6. More Plantain Chips, Please 5. Sleepless in Seattle I worked as a Resident Advisor (RA) for three years. Initially, I saw the job as a way to pay for room and board. However, my three years as an RA dealing with alcohol or marijuana incidents, roommate drama, and residents who don’t shower developed my leadership, listening, communication, and conflict resolution skills. These skills help me immensely in professional and personal lives. I like cake and frosting, a lot! 1. Humble Beginnings First 4 years of my life were spent with my grandparents in rural villages that had no indoor plumbing and electricity at the time After being reunited with my parents at age 4, I lived on campus Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, where my parents taught and saw patients
