Science And Mathematics

Transcript: Archimedes is considered to be one of the most brilliant mathematicians in history. He figured out many complicated mathematical sums. He probably got his love for math from his father, who was an astronomer. Archimedes invented a miniature planetarium, but his main job was to solve problems for the King of Syracuse, which was a part of Sicily in Italy. Legend has it that the king worried that the royal crown maker might be replacing some of the gold in his crowns with a less valuable material. The king asked Archimedes to find a way to determine if the crowns were 100 percent gold. Archimedes thought of the solution while in his bathtub. He supposedly jumped out of the tub and ran through the streets naked, shouting, “Eureka! Eureka!” Science And Mathematics The Greek interest in science was first seen in the city of Miletus, in Ionia. Here the philosopher Thales got fame by predicting a solar eclipse in 585 BC. None of his work survive, but his reputation among Greeks in the following centuries is that of a man who takes a reasonable or 'scientific' approach to the mysteries of the natural world. This reputation seems to be supported by the achievements of his student Anaximander. He is credited with being the first man to attempt a map of the world, and he offers a bold explanation of the origin of the universe. In Anaximander's theory space results from a struggle between the opposites of heat and cold. In the beginning of time the two begin to separate, resulting in a ball of fire surrounded by mist. The hot ball contracts and hardens, forming a solid sphere at the center of the earth. Chris The Legacy Of Mathematics Accent Greece created the legacy of mathematics and they created the system of mathematics that we learn at school today. They create all the formulas like Pythagorean theorem this is one of the most well know/important formulas. it allows us to see lengths of the sides of a right triangle. Let’s say two friends are meeting at a playground. John is already at the playground but his mate Bob needs to get there taking the shortest path possible. Bob has two ways he can go. He can follow the roads getting to the park - first heading south 3 km, then heading west four Km. The total distance covered following the roads will be 7 km. The other way he can get there is by cutting through some open land and walk directly to the park. If we apply Pythagoras's theorem to calculate the distance you will get: (3)2 + (4)2 = 9 + 16 = C2 √25 = C 5 Miles. = C Leucippus, originally came up with the atomic theory, but it was then adopted by Democritus. The atomic theory stated that the universe is composed of two elements. The atoms and the void in which they exist and move. atoms were miniscule quantities of matter. Democritus hypothesized that atoms cannot be destroyed, differ in size, shape and temperature, are always moving, and are invisible. He believed that there are an infinite number of atoms. This hypothesis was created in 465BC. look at early man and look at us now the mathematical advances brought about by settled agriculture in Mesopotamia and Egypt and the revolutionary developments of ancient Greece and the greek civilization, the story of mathematics is a long and impressive one. find out more here: http://www.storyofmathematics.com Who created mathematics Archimedes' Principle Legacy of Science Democritus .
