Transcript: Job Description A civil engineer is someone who designs and supervises large construction projects, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Hours and environment You'll work between 35 and 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Your time will be split between the office and working on site. Sitework would be in all weathers and may involve extensive travel, sometimes overseas, depending on the contract. Skills and interests To be a civil-engineer technician, you'll need: Excellent maths, science, and IT skills The ability to explain design ideas and plans clearly The ability to analyse large amounts of data and assess solutions Confident decision-making ability Excellent communication skills Project management skills The ability to work within budgets and to deadlines Good teamworking skills A comprehensive knowledge of relevant legal regulations. Entry To become a civil engineer you normally need a three-year Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) or four-year Masters degree (MEng) in civil engineering. These qualifications are important if you want to gain incorporated or chartered engineer status later in your career. You could take other engineering-related subjects but it may take you longer to fully qualify. Annual income Income for new graduate engineers is between $25,152 and $59,666 a year. Experienced engineers earn between $70,959 and $97,737 Chartered engineers can earn around $101,219 year. Career goals Have the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to any situation. An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams Design a system, component, or process in more than one civil engineering context Reflection I chose civil engineering as my career choice because I have always been fascinated with civil related projects. I have always been a keen observer of bridges, railroads and buildings. Transcript: Control System After hard work through whole semester final result was achieved. The project presented knowledge from various parts of mechatronics, like mechanics, electronics or hydraulics. Price of all components was calculated as less than 13 000 euros and total price of the machine with 70% of gain was estimated as 22 000 euro, what in general is good price in comparation with quality and prices of different systems avaliables in the market. According to informations publicated in the presented work, in 1985 incom from sold SRS devices were about 250 millions of USD, with constant growing rate, what in 2010 brought more than 1 billion of USD. Numbers of Portuguese market says that amount of storage and transport companies in this country grown in last 30 yeras for about 9 000 and in 2012 was equal to almost 25 000. Last criterium was price. Then was found that the less expensive system the better, while cheap still needs to be of good quality. After presented analysis, was chosen to develop SRS system to transport low load, as boxes, bins etc. However further visit in the warehouse of Joalpe company shown that pallets are more common type of storage and final decision was done - developing project was Semi-Automatic Storage and Retrieval System. Next photos respectively presents: Joalpe warehouse, CAD system drawing - beginning, middle, final design. Power system consists of a three-phase electric motor and hydraulic pump. These two devices are powered by a three-phase line 230/400V including protective earth conductor. Hydraulic pump is protected from overload by fuses and electric motor by fuses and thermomagnetic relays. System includes also invertors which allow operations of ascent and descent of the telescopic forks Engineering thesis presentation Storage and Retrieval Systems (SRS) are machines helping in better organization of warehouses. First machines were invented in 1960s and were mainly focusing on transportation of heavy load. With time market shown its interest for more advanced equipment which often is already fully automatic (ASRS). Nowadays we may distinguish between machines working not only with pallets and heavy load but also with bins or boxes which contain low load. The objective of the project was to built the most efficient machine relating to price and market needs. For this as first was made market analysis and later on, were done specifications of the system and finally proper engineering project started. Mechanics Hydraulics Hydraulic system posses electrovalves. Depending from which action is needed, operator press button to extend or withdraw forks. Then flow passes through coil which magnetic field pushes electrovalve and permit extension (for EVF coil) or withdrawal (for EVT coil). Figure presents I-beam. Red arrow represents gravity force, purple arrows vertical applied force and orange arrows are corresponding to support points. As we can see maximum deflection is given as little more than 1 mm. System posses security systems, which doesnt permit flow of the current in case when engine temperature is too high, or system reaches its limit (maximum or minimum) permitted position. System is steered by remote wired controller with 5 buttons. 2 of them are responsible for elevation of the fork and 2 for its sagital movement. 5th is STOP button which cuts off the power when operator decides that something is wrong. It is forbidden to push 2 buttons with opposite information. Control circuit and flow diagram chart are presented in following fotos. Main construction of the machine is made from 2 vertical U-beams and one I-beam, mounted in horizontal position on top of them. To horizontal beam is coupled pulley. At the bottom there is rectangular platform, coupled with vertical beams by screws and welded to hollow frame under it. On that platform is placed gear 3-phase electric motor and hydraulic pump with 10l oil reservoir. On the shaft of electrical motor is another pulley where is wonded 15m of steel rope which passes through wheel in the top of the machine and gives support to the telescopic forks. These can move sagitally (to pick up the pallet from the rack) and its movement is possible due to fluid pumped through hoses to its cylinders by the pump. 4 wheels (2 mounted in the bottom and 2 in the top of the machine) helps in horizontal translation. Due to system is not fully automatic, this movement is made by human effort, hence next to price and security another important parameter was weight of the system. It was about 2250 kg and calculations said that may be easily pushed by a human. Power system Machine description Platform presented behind is subjected to three vertical forces. Two of them are weight of electric motor and hydraulic unit, third is elevation force due to cargo weight. Green arrows are fixing points, purple are weight forces. Displacement is less than 1mm. In case presented picture, blue-red color bar corresponds to deformation which in maximum point
