Capella

Transcript: In the Northern Hemisphere, this star is always visible north of 44 degrees north. There are no planets orbiting the Capella star. Capella Capella is Latin for "small female goat". According to Ptolemy, it is the goat that the charioteer has over his left shoulder in the constellation which it resides. The star is actually made up of 2 pairs of binary stars orbiting around each other that glow so brightly they seems to be one star. One pair is 2 main sequence giant stars, while the other pair consists of 2 red dwarfs. Capella is often believed to represent the goat, Amalthea, who suckled the infant Zeus. Its horn was later broken off to become the cornucopia. Zeus granted Capella a place in the sky for gratitude, along with her kids which rest on the charioteer’s forearm. Luminousity: 78.5 times brighter than the sun Mass: 2.7 times the mass of the sun Capella can be seen during the winter. Our star is located in the constellation Auriga. Temperature: 9800 degrees Kelvin total The stars in the main sequence pair are cooling and becoming red giants. Previously, it was most likely protostar. After becoming a red giant, the stars will change into planetary nebulas. The stars in the red dwarf pair last longer than the universe is old, we are unsure what they will evolve into, but it is believed that they will turn into blue dwarves. Distance: approximately 32 light years away Age: approximately 525 million years old If Capella was put in place of our sun, Earth would quickly burn up due to the extreme heat from being so close to Capella. To be able to survive, Earth would have to be at a distance between 5.25AU and 11.24AU (or Saturn's distance from our sun). Earth would have to increase its orbital speed in order to stay orbiting Capella.

Transcript: Capella's common name is "Little Goat", mostly because its name derives from the Latin word capra "goat". Its scientific name is Alpha Aur. Capella is the brightest star in a five-sided star pattern, which we know as the constellation Auriga the Charioteer. Apparent Magnitude = 0.08 Absolute Magnitude = 0.4 A self-luminous celestial body consisting of gas held together by its own gravity in which the energy generated by nuclear reactions in the interior is balanced by the outflow of energy to the surface, and the inward-directed gravitational forces are balanced by the outward-directed gas and radiation pressures. Which constellation does Capella belong to? Jourdan Kile Capella consists of two stars, both yellow giants. They emit about 80 and 50 times more overall light than the sun. They are both yellow giant stars at the end of their normal lifetimes (because they are more bigger and have higher internal pressures, which causes them to burn their nuclear fuel faster and have shorter lifespans). They are transitioning from hotter to cooler, and will soon become red giants. However, since their current phase is similar to the sun, they have the spectral type G6 and G2. Rollins College is a liberal arts institution and the oldest recognized college in Florida. it is located at Winter Park, Florida 32789-4499 Orange county I chose this college because it is one of the oldest colleges in Florida Bordering Lake Virginia, Rollins occupies a lush, 70-acre campus in a quaint community near Orlando and is characterized by its traditional Spanish-Mediterranean architecture. The campus is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Orlando and at least 30 minutes by car from Orlando International Airport. Admission to Rollins is highly selective. Many factors are considered in the admission process, including each candidate’s academic record, talents, interests, and potential to contribute to the Rollins and local community. Common Application On-Line Application ($40.00 application fee) Common Application Paper Application ($40.00 application fee). A representation of your strengths, talents, or interests—anything that helps us better understand who you are and your potential to contribute to the Rollins community. Your representation is limited only by your imagination and creativity. Examples of submissions from past applicants include the following: YouTube videos, DVDs or slide shows of their athletic or artistic talents; power points or scrapbooks of their backgrounds, interests or accomplishments; music or poetry they composed. It is very important that your representation is prepared specifically for your Rollins admission application and is not something you used for another purpose. Please note that your representation will not be returned. Scholarships Applicants who expect to be considered for Cornell Scholarships (full tuition), Deans’ Scholarships (up to $20,000 per year) or Donald Cram Scholarships (for natural sciences majors) should submit a completed application by January 5 for priority consideration. Applicants who expect to be considered for Centennial or Presidential Scholarships (ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 per year) should submit a completed application by February 15. Capella

Transcript: Capella What is Capella? What is Capella? Capella is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga the Charioteer. It’s actually 2 stars, each with a golden color similar to our sun. Capella is the brightest star we see at night of the same spectral type, or color, as our daytime star, the sun. Like our sun, Capella appears as a yellow or golden star. It is the brightest yellow star visible in our sky and much bigger and brighter than our sun, but of course much farther away, about 42 light-years in contrast to the sun’s 8 light-minutes. Characteristics Characteristics Capella is a bright star in the constellation Auriga. While Capella appears as a single star to the naked eye, it actually is a group of four stars. Two large binary stars, and two fainter binary dwarfs. Capella has a spectral type of G5III. Spectral Type Spectral Type Capella has a surface temperature of 4940° Kelvin Surface Temperature Surface Temperature Capella has a luminosity 79 times the Sun. Luminosity Class Luminosity Class Capella has a mass of 2.69 solar masses or 2.7 times the mass of the sun. Mass Mass Capella is 590 to 650 million years old. Age Age Capella is a Yellow Type-G Giant Star. Stage of Life Stage of Life HR Diagram HR Diagram Life Cycle Life Cycle The first stage of Capella's life cycle is a nebula which is a cloud of gas and dust The second stage of Capella's life cycle is a protostar which is a contracting mass of gas that represents an early stage in the formation of a star, before nucleosynthesis has begun. Capella's third and currents stage of it's life cycle is a main sequence star.Main sequence stars fuse hydrogen atoms to form helium atoms in their cores. About 90 percent of the stars in the universe, including the sun, are main sequence stars. These stars can range from about a tenth of the mass of the sun to up to 200 times as massive. Capella's third stage of life is a red giant. Red giants are very large stasr of high luminosity and low surface temperature. Red giants are thought to be in a late stage of evolution when no hydrogen remains in the core to fuel nuclear fusion. Capella's fifth stage of life is 1a supernova. 1a supernova is a type of supernova that occurs in binary systems (two stars orbiting one another) in which one of the stars is a white dwarf. The other star will try to become a white dwarf but due to its size it cant. A super nova happens when the star sucks in a neighboring star as a last resort to stay alive. The sixth and final stage of Capella's life cycle is neutron star. It is the inner core that's left after the explosion in the previous stage. How long will Capella live? Capella's life as a star will be less than one thousandth as long the sun's will be. When was Capella discovered and who discovered it? Capella's binary nature was first discovered by professor William Wallace Campbell of the Lick Observatory in 1899 after analyzing photographic plates taken in the period from August 1896 to February 1897. Past and Present Past and Present Capella is the Latin word for ‘nanny goat,’ and which is why the star is often called the Goat Star. From mid-latitudes of the U.S. and Europe, Capella is far enough to the north to be seen at some time of the night all year round. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s best in winter, when you’ll find golden Capella high overhead before you go to sleep. Some people use the Big Dipper to locate Capella. During the Middle Ages, Capella was seen as one of the Behenian fixed stars, fifteen stars that were considered a a source of astrological energy, and particularly useful for magical spells Capella is the brightest star in the constellation of Auriga.
