Transcript: Bob Marley The compilation album Legend (1984), released three years after his death, is reggae's best-selling album, going ten times Platinum which is also one Diamond in the U.S. and selling 25 million copies worldwide. Marley's idea was that everyone in the world should stop fighting and become one - a similar sentiment to John Lennon's "Imagine" and George Harrison's "Give Me Love." There is, however, a deeper meaning behind the song than a simple call for unity. Some of the lyrics are about oppression and how sinners will pay for their evil deeds in the end. For many listeners, the deeper message is lost in the overwhelming chorus. Marley wrote this song amid the turmoil of the Jamaican elections in December, 1976. Marley had supported Michael Manley when he won the election in 1972 and became Prime Minister of Jamaica, but four years later, Marley was by far the most popular person in Jamaica, and he refused to take a political stance as the country was divided between Manley's People's National Party and the Jamaican Labour Party headed by Edward Seaga. It was very violent time in the country, and Marley tried to stay politically neutral while offering peace and shelter however he could - his Hope Road hope was kind of a safehouse for people with nowhere to go. The journalist Vivien Goldman was with Marley at the time and remembers him working on "One Love" while sitting on his small bed while a young girl sat on the other end and other visitors gathered in the room. "We'll share the shelter, of my single bed," Marley sang, as he created a song they was both peaceful and angry at the same time. In July 1977, Marley was found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of one of his toes. Contrary to urban legend, this lesion was not primarily caused by an injury during a football match in that year, but was instead a symptom of the already existing cancer. Marley turned down doctors' advice to have his toe amputated, citing his religious beliefs. Despite his illness, he continued touring and was in the process of scheduling a world tour in 1980. The intention was for Inner Circle to be his opening act on the tour but after their lead singer Jacob Miller died in Jamaica in March 1980 after returning from a scouting mission in Brazil this was no longer mentioned. Bob Marley was a member of the Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. Bob Marley became an ardent proponent of Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. He once gave the following response, which was typical, to a question put to him during a recorded interview: Interviewer: "Can you tell the people what it means being a Rastafarian?" Bob: "I would say to the people, Be still, and know that His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is the Almighty. The final concert of Bob Marley's career was held September 23, 1980 at the Stanley Theater (now called The Benedum Center For The Performing Arts) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The audio recording of that concert is now available on CD, vinyl, and digital music services. Shortly after, Marley's health deteriorated and he became very ill; the cancer had spread throughout his body. The rest of the tour was cancelled and Marley sought treatment at the Bavarian clinic of Josef Issels, where he received a controversial type of cancer therapy (Issels treatment) partly based on avoidance of certain foods, drinks, and other substances. The PNP is very conservative and Bob said that it made him sick! The JLP was accused by the PNP of being Fascist and because they used such a strict form of democratic socialism people thought that it was a cover up for being communist and eventually it would come to that. The area was called Trench Town and was a very poor ghetto. Bob owned one outfit and one pair of shoes. One day He came home from school and said that he gave his books to a kid who needed then and that he is no longer going to school. Bob had a passion for music and started playing the guitar. Bob Moved to America when he was 17 in 1970. At this point he had started to make a name for himself in Kingston but he wanted to be bigger! He was also only getting paid about 3 pounds a week. This is equivalent to about $4.83 He also was able to join the violence between the two parties. and sings anti-war songs In 1974 Bob Marley formed a new group under the same name When in America Bob met with his mom and he also was able to meet with Lee "Scratch" Paylor. -Scratch is a good friend of Coxsone. Bob did a concert with Stevie Wonder and they actually preformed two songs together Stevie gave half his pay to a local charity and that inspire him to do a free concert in Jamaica This concert was close to the time of the election in Jamaica neither party wanted Bob to take the side of the other party during the concert because of how influential he was and whatever he liked, the people liked Early Life Injuries Bob Marley eventually flew in to Jamaica on May 8 1981 after being told again there was nothing that could be done Bob Would later buy the house and live there and leave it open to friends, family, and people who lived in the neighborhood The house was in the nice part of town and was 2 doors down from the kings house (Governor) and three doors down from the Prime ministers house. Neither of those people really liked anything having to do with anything Rastafarian. When asked why he moved there he said "Sista, I'm Bringin the ghetto uptown!" Treatment Death However it was very hard t get played on the radio becasue Rastafarians were still not very popular and Double Barrel Records were not a very big label at the time. The Wailers wrote a song called "Simmer Down" and it was a first there first hit In Jamaica there was an island huge island house owned by a man named Chris Blackwell and he let Bob Marley rehearse there Bigger Expansion The beginning of a revolution (Cont.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1B55wEB030 The Beginning of a Revolution This is where he started to spread the Rastafarian way of life. -Rastafarian's take most of there beliefs out of the old testament of the Bible. -They also beleive that Haile Selassie, AKA Ras Tafari, AKA Jah, was the second coming of Christ. -Dread locks were a sign you were Rastafarian -Rastafarians would smoke ganja not just to get high but becasue they felt it made them closer to Jah It also has influences from Funk and Soul music and can be very jazzy at times. Bob was playing soccer a couple years ago and had hid foot stepped on by a player wearing cleats. The doctors removed the nail and everything was okay. Months after the peace concert Bob went jogging with his manager and all the sudden stopped and fell. He was foaming at the mouth and was taken to the hospital. He was told he had cancer in the lunges, brain and various other places and there was no chance of any cure, although it could have been prevented if he participated in regular check-ups. He was able to spend a little longer with friends and family but would sadly die on May 11 1981, just three days later. Bob Marley and the Wailers went on tour in England. There was some miss communication between the band and the managers. The band was not aware that the tour was only a promotional tour, which meant that they would not get paid. When they arived back Neville "Bunny" Livingston (Lead Vocalist of The Wailers) left the band because he felt he was not being respected

Some more than others. people have been Inspired so much by him and all Bob Marley ever wanted to do was just have fun with it, but ended up doing so much more than planned. Which now he is known for his music everywhere. He inspired so much people. As soon as Bob's carree just started to get better, at age 36 on May 11, 1981 he died. While playing soccer one day he stepped on a nail that got into his toe. He talked to a docter and said "the only way itll get better is amputation(surgery) to cure the cancer. So about a year later Bob was jogging in a park in Miami flordia. He all a sudden collapesed dead. He died because he never got his toe amputated to get rid of the cancer.
