Transcript: Intro Architecture and its influence Architecture is one of the very important qualities in our society and is one of the main foundations that we use everyday. Def of Architecture: “the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones”. It is thought of as an art right? But that is not all that it is made for… There are many reasons as to why architecture is important like how it affects our environment, how it influences our behavior and how it is used in our society. When it comes to our environment being harmed, we tend to think of the mass deforestation, the animals going extinct, or the pollution. But some of the problem is actually the buildings that we live in on a daily basis. But Solar energy can be the safest way to get energy when not used in a power plant and cleaned well. Environment The energy sources used for the structures can be harmful: *Hydro electric - water pollution from power plants *Power lines - air pollution: when making the materials (using fire to melt the plastic) and deforestation: cutting down trees for the poles *Fire heated homes - the burnt wood from the fire releases Greenhouse gases and so does the coal Energy sources And not only will environmentally friendly houses keep nature safe, but can also help you stay healthy: *More natural light - less wood and more windows helps us stay healthy from some risks like depression or cancer… and less deforestation *Grass on roofs - more interesting for our homes but also means that there are no tar sealants that make PAHs that are harmful to the water Benefits Architecture is important to our society from the way we use it to what is put in them, but how can it also affect our human behavior? Well, their are a lot of reasons actually, and they are all things that architects have to keep in mind when designing. Behavior *Window lighting - Natural light can help increase a person's mood and helps promote human productivity. * Windows in the right places - When placing windows, architects have to think about the size of the room and what it could be used for, like you don’t want to have a badly placed window in a relaxing area and cause unrest from the over heat from the light coming through the window *Open space - When designing a room, having an open space and no weird shapes with the walls helps people have an easier time moving their furniture around and have the choice to put it wherever they want to Windows and space *Stairs vs elevators/escalators - When in a building trying to get to the next floor, you could have the choice between an elevator, the stairs or an escalator in some cases. The staircase is usually hidden behind a metal door or hidden in a corner, and most people want to go for the more convenient one, so they don’t use the stairs. If architects design the stairs to be grander or more artistic, it would make them more inviting/appealing and people would take the stairs more often. Which can also help increase their health because of the more exercise.
