Autism Is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders know as Pervasive Developmental Disorders. Transcript: Autism What is it? [aw-tiz-uhm]: noun- a generalized name for a spectrum of developmental disorders characterized by impaired communication, excessive rigidity, and emotional detachment. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined. There is no known cause. There is no known cure. No two people with autism have the same symtoms There is a wide spectrum of different cases. It goes from relatively mild cases such as asburgers disorder, social impediments, and learning disabilities.... to severe autism, in which children and adults with the disorder cannot speak at all. Matthew It reaches from brothers... Temple Grandin to brilliant scientists/ activists... Leonardo DiCaprio as Arnie in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" to Hollywood. Every 15 minutes a child is diagnosed with autism. That's 1 in 110 children. 3 out of 4 children who have autism are boys. That's one in 70 boys. But it is not all bad. Be aware.

What can we do to end this epidemic? Lack of Advocacy Autism awareness needs to rise. As of October 15, 2012 state regulated health insurance plans, both for-profit and non-profit, are required to offer an autism benefit for their insured members. PA 99 and 100 of 2012 includes the following highlights: Coverage for the treatment of ASD may be limited to a member through 18 years of age and may be subject to a maximum annual benefit as follows: For a covered member through 6 years of age, $50,000.00. For a covered member from 7 years of age through 12 years of age, $40,000.00. For a covered member from 13 years of age through 18 years of age, $30,000.00. A covered member must receive a diagnosis of ASD by a licensed physician or a licensed psychologist to receive coverage for ASD services. Insurance carriers may require an evaluation of the member be conducted every three years. Treatment of ASD must be evidence based and includes the following care as determined by a licensed physician or a licensed psychologist: Behavioral health treatment (applied behavior analysis), Pharmacy care, Psychiatric care, Psychological care, and/or. Therapeutic care (speech therapy, occupational therapy). 1 in 88 children in the United States have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Asperger's Autistic Disorder Pervasive-Developmental Disorder Signs to watch for in children No, there is no known treatment for autism, however medicine can be given to patients that also suffer from anxiety, depression, or seizures. Is there a treatment for Autism? What Causes Autism? For Autism to be diagnosed it must first start with the parents. If they suspect something may be delayed with their child they should bring it up to their doctors. They will ask you to record your child's behavior. Once this information is recorded and the doctor feels the child could have a disability a team will then perform tests.
