Transcript: Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He was defeated many times at winning, but he tried again and again nonetheless. "You know what makes a good loser? Practice." -As quoted in Papa, A memoir The Sportsman American Author Interesting Fact: He is notorious for military writing. He joined a group of expatriate writers and lived in Paris with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein (among others). By 1928, the couple, with son Patrick, moved back to the US. Ernest and Pauline had another son named Gregory Hancock. The Hemingways found a home in Key West, Florida which to this day is known as the Hemingway House. (The House also houses Hemingway cats which have 6 fingers instead of 5. They are called Hemingway cats). Ernest's passion for deep sea fishing began when he first moved to Key West, Florida. His passion turned into a life long journey and adventure. Born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21, 1899 1899-1961 Nobel Prize Writer In 1923, Hadley and Ernest welcomed their first son, John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway. The couple, with John (Jack) traveled to the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. From this experience, Hemingway wrote his first novel, "The Sun Also Rises." The couple divorced shortly after the novel was produced, in part, to Hemingway's affair with a woman named, Pauline Pfeiffer, who was to become wife #2. He loved to hunt, fish, and always wanted his characters to portray him in a way. He wrote of strong men, soldiers, bullfighters, and many other manly men. His characters always showed strength, courage, and honesty. To me heaven would be a big bull ring with me holding two barrera seats and a trout stream outside that no one else was allowed to fish in and two lovely houses in the town; one where I would have my wife and children and be monogamous and love them truly and well and the other where I would have my nine beautiful mistresses on nine different floors. -Hemingway in a Letter to F. Scott Fitzgerald Pauline Pfeiffer When the US entered WWII, Hemingway became a key correspondent. He was present at many of the war's key moments, including D-Day. During his time in WWII, he met another war correspondent, Mary Welsh, who was, once again, to become his next wife. The couple would marry and have a home in Ketchum. Writing He joined a volunteer Ambulance unit in the Italian Army after the US entered the war. During this time, he was on the front lines where he was wounded. The Italian Army decorated him heavily after his injury. Memorable Quote When he wasn't writing, Hemingway spent much of the 1930s chasing adventure: big-game hunting in Africa, bullfighting in Spain, deep-sea fishing in Florida. While reporting on the Spanish Civil War in 1937, Hemingway met a fellow war correspondent named Martha Gellhorn. Soon after Gellhorn and Hemingway met, Hemingway and Pfeiffer's marriage deteroriated, and Gellhorn and Hemingway were left to marry. They purchased a house in Havana, Cuba. Martha Gellhorn His Wives His characters portrayed his life. Wrote many amazing pieces of work from: "The Sun Also Rises" "Farewell to Arms" "Old Man and the Sea" "For Whom The Bell Tolls" During his time in Cuba and his adventures in Africa, Hemingway suffered many injuries and survived multiple plane crashes. His body soon began to betray him. After all of his adventures of deep sea fishing, bull fighting, big game hunting, war corresponding, and meeting the loves of his life, his body began to fight. He had deteriorating mental and physical health. On July 2, 1961, Hemingway committed suicide in his Ketchum home. As well as being a novelist, Ernest wrote for many different newspapers. He wrote for the Kansas City Star, which he left, when he went to fight in World War I. He always had a passion for writing, and it was a life long career. Ernest Hemingway left behind a legacy of prose and short direct writing. He wrote many novels and short stories that made his mark upon American writers and students a like. Hemingway is the Lady Gaga of his time, and was famous beyond his time. Ernest Hemingway Enjoyed Deep Sea Fishing Hadley Richardson #1 Wife After writing "The Old Man and the Sea," Hemingway finally won the Nobel Prize in 1954.
